Boars and sows are different in a lot of ways. It is important to remember that every guinea pig is different and each have their own personalities. There is always a possibility of a pair or group falling out, however this is small. Please see my companionship section.
Boars:
- They can only live in pairs or trios, or as one neutered boar with a group of sows
- Boars need more space
- Boars go through hormone surges during 5-9 months and 10-14 months old
- Boars need two of everything in their enclosure and hides that have multiple exits
- They are often calmer and happier for humans to handle them - this isn't always the case
Sows:
- Sows can live in pairs or large groups - I have 13 sows and 1 neutered boar!
- They have slightly smaller minimum space needs
- Sows will go through heightened dominance behaviours when in heat which happens every 2 weeks
- Sow groups are often better balanced when a neutered boar is introduced
As above, all guinea pigs have their own personalities and there are always exceptions to the above. I always advise that you meet the piggies you're going to adopt to pick which personalities you love and that will fit in with your lifestyle!
